Oh nooo, my new kitchen is missing something REALLY important

I miss my old kitchen. Shhhhhh, don’t tell my hubby. He would KILLLLL me if he heard me say that. He’d be like WTF, we spent all that money and dealt with all those headaches and you’re not grateful? No, schnookiepants, I AM grateful. I love our new kitchen. But I miss my old kitchen.

Sure it had water that was leaking behind the cabinets and probably growing mold. And it had a dining table that was in a room we never used so it was just a giant shit collector. And it had an oven that smelled like the charred corpse of a rotting dead elf. But it had something else too. It had memories. So many amazing memories.

But this kitchen is gone now, and all I have left is the pictures on my computer and the memories in my head, and a new kitchen. See? I really do love it. What’s not to love?

Island or beer pong table? You decide.

We broke down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room so we just have one big kitchen now and no shit-collector room.

I’m not sure what the heck I’m going to put on these shelves. Pops of color is all I know so if you have ideas, leave them in the comments… pleeeeease.

Yayyy, a pantry!! In my old kitchen everything was spread all over the place and I would forget about things and find expiration dates from past centuries.

The perfect cabinet to hide our coffee maker when it’s not in use (never happens). And our TV when it’s not on (never happens). And other stuff.

So those are a few pictures of my new kitchen. My new kitchen that I absolutely love but not quite as much as my old one because it’s missing something. Not a walk-in pantry. Not a Sub Zero fridge. Not one of those extra sinks to do food prep. We couldn’t afford those things. Luckily ours is missing something that’s within our budget. Memories.

So we’re going to start dancing a lot in our new kitchen, and sharing highs and lows at the dinner table, and serving pancake breakfasts, and singing happy birthdays, and having our friends over to fill the air with funny toasts and drunk laughter. And as much as I hate that it’s going to get some nicks and stains here or there, I’ve realized something. Nicks and stains just mean a kitchen has been broken in with laughter and stories and love. Our new kitchen might be prettier and sparklier and expensiver, but it’ll never be as quite as good as our old one. Well, maybe it will be… in many many years.

If you like this, please don’t forget to like and share it! And feel free to leave ideas for what I should put on the shelves and on the GIANT blank wall behind the stools. Thank you!!

Shouldn’t have been cutting onions while reading this post! But the new kitchen turned out beautifully and the new memories are just waiting to be made!!

If its not a paint you can safely color on, buy a gallon of that paint and let Zoey and Holden make pictures on that stretch of blank wall. They can wash it off and recolor every week or so. Fun for them, and new pictures for you! When my kids were that young, it was an incentive for them. Pick up your toys and mommy will let you color on the wall!

Or chalkboard paint. I’m planning on doing that once this house is completely ours and we have a playroom.

That is gorgeous. I’m obsessed with your tile wall. That is a stunning choice. When I redo my kitchen (one day), I’m copying you!

Your new kitchen is stunning! On the top shelf you could put a fern in a white pot on the left (a good fake one, if you think you would kill it. Just dust it every now and then). And then next to it on the right a larger white bowl (or other large-ish white cooking dish) to balance it out. I love the color in the middle, and I think a pop of natural green would finish the space really nicely!

Cori, I love this idea! I like the idea of adding some greenery that I can’t kill. It makes it a little warmer. Thanks!

Gorgeous. What type of countertop did you use?

    • BabySideburns at 5:23 pm

Quartz. And so far we love it!!

I vote that you blow up some of the photos of old kitchen memories (including the Elf sacrifice) and stagger them on the blank wall!

Or, you know, just the elf in the oven blown up REALLY big. Just that. Call it art. 😉

Shelf option: frame some pictures of the memories in your old kitchen 🙂

It’s gorgeous but I know what you mean! More memories to be had!

I agree with an orchid or maybe a pretty, colorful vase! Though in my house that s**t gets broken!

OUTSTANDING new kitchen. Yay! Now time to break it in ?

Beautiful. You are right though memories are important. We just bought a beautiful house leaving the nearly condemned rental we were in. All of my baby’s early growing was there so it is a little heart tugging to leave it behind. We will make memories here. I love your blog. If we lived in the same town I would want to be friends. You saved me from the perfect moms.

Amazing kitchen! I love it! Memories will happen in there too. How about small pots of herbs? Super easy, and fresh herbs at the ready!

  13. Kelli at 11:25 am

What about some succulents on the shelves?

  14. Jen at 11:26 am

There is no cook. Where is your personal chef? I feel this is tge essential item missing from my kitchen.

Love your blog! It’s spot on all the time!
For me I would put some framed recipes- old ones from your mom or grandmom, your in-laws etc. They have this new glass etching thing that you can take any picture and it will print onto the glass- and then hang it like that! I also found these picture frames that you can put art into and change it easily- have one for each kid to showcase the newest school art. Whatever it is I’m sure it will be great- love that kitchen!

This one got me right in the feels! Thanks for sharing your memories!

Shelves need a cookbook collection. I have about 30 and only use about 3 of them lol. Blank wall needs a Giant spice and herb and vinegar case. I cook a lot and wish I had one. All my herb.s. and stuff is packed into a small space I can never find anything. Ugh

    • BabySideburns at 5:25 pm

That’s an awesome idea. I actually have this cubby shelf thing with like 20+ cubby holes that are the perfect size for spices. Maybe I’ll paint it a bright color and hang it. Thanks!

For a pop of colour, I saw in one kitchen (I’m out house hunting) the owners had glass jars filled with colourful candy and gum b***s in them. They looked amazing against the white walls. But I’m sure it’s a headache dealing with kids who will want to eat it all the time.

Maybe use clear colored marbles would be a good substitute. I also have some New Orleans beads in one that look kind of cool.

  19. Amber at 2:19 pm

There’s an adorable sign that says “our kitchen is for dancing!” Google it! I plan on getting for mine! Beautiful remodel!

  20. Kelly at 3:14 pm

You could put herb plants on the shelf to add to dishes when cooking

  21. Mara at 3:41 pm

GORGEOUS! Pictures of Zoey and Holden would look great on those shelves! 🙂 And Daddy Sideburns too!

  22. Shawna Whitford at 8:07 pm

Your mugs should be in rainbow order. 🙂 I agree that you need some green. Maybe a clear glass vase with lemons and limes in it.

    • Shawna Whitford at 8:08 pm

I would suggest fakes ones so they don’t rot up there because you forget they are there. LOL

  23. Dana Bozeday at 10:52 pm

I love it!!!! So so so fabulous! And all the pictures of your kiddos in the kitchen…so cute.

  24. Amanda at 8:06 am

Beautiful! Where did you get the chairs that are at the table? Love them.

You are too funny! Your kitchen is beautiful; you are blessed with a new one and blessed with the memories of the old. As I was trying to part with some of my Mama’s things after she died, I was struggling. My son was “helping” (bad choice for a helper–he wanted to pitch everything in a hurry!). As I agonized over a pair of her bedroom slippers (I know–SLIPPERS! She was so tiny I could not even squeeze my great toe into them), and yet, they held memories; they were silk with a tiny bit of a heel, little teensy toe opening, and no strap on the back. I loved how they sounded when she walked. They were reminiscent of the old movie stars’ slippers. As I loving fondled them, my son shattered my nostalgic moment when he said, “You know, Mom, just because you part with a “thing” doesn’t mean you lose the memory that will be with you forever.” I was startled by his comment until I took a minute to process and digest it. Although I have a brain injury (CVA), I WAS able to process it immediately. It was probably the most profound thing he has ever said to me. My helper actually DID help. That was 9 years ago, and am FINALLY ready to clean out the house of my parents’ things, knowing that I’m not discarding the memories. NINE YEARS! I told you I’m SLOW. But it’s time to pull the trigger and pass their things onto someone who can make their own memories with my treasures. I pray their house will be filled with joy and laughter and music–LOTS of those–which are what make my memories so dear.

  26. Allison at 9:52 am

I love it. Where did you get the table and chairs?

  27. Pappy at 7:41 am

The architect’s father is ready to cook omelets in this amazing kitchen!

  28. Suzie at 3:49 pm

Where is the kitchen backsplash tile from!?! I can’t find it anywhere
