Boo hoo hoooo, guess what my daughter did for the first time this morning!!

Dear Zoey,

So this morning I pulled up to your school to drop you and your friend off and you did something. Something you’ve never done before. When I said, “Give me a kiss goodbye,” you giggled and said, “Mommmm, no.” It wasn’t in a mean way. I could tell you were just embarrassed in front of your friend. And you must have noticed the mega depressed look on my face because you gave me a little peck anyway.

But guess what? I get it. I was a kid once too, you know. Before things like cell phones and the Internet, when dinosaurs still stomped the earth, and I remember feeling that way.

Last year when you were little I used to say that I would never let you leave the car without kissing me goodbye. If you tried I would yell out the window, “I LOVE YOU ZOEEEYYYYY!!!!” and embarrass you even more, ensuring that the next day you would definitely stop and kiss me before you walked away because otherwise I’d mortify you. But I’m not going to do that anymore.

I’d like to make a deal with you. Here are the terms. You don’t have to kiss me when you’re leaving my car every morning. Nope, that whole sentence is not a typo. I actually just said that. From now on you can just give me a smile and a wave and say, “Bye Mom!” and I’ll do the same. On ONE condition. You are legally required to kiss me once before we walk out of the house. I don’t care if I’m screaming at your to get your shoes on. I don’t care if you’re having a gigantic fight with your brother. I don’t care if we’re like 9000 minutes late. We will stop and give each other a little hug and kiss.

Because as much as you need to maintain your dignity on the school playground, I need my kiss every morning. I need it more than breakfast, more than coffee, more than anything. That one little kiss gets me through the day.

Deal?

Love,

Mom

Yes and yes! I will admit this brought tears to my eyes. Before I even got to the paragraph about the kids at home, I was already thinking it in my head. My daughter is still at the age where hugs and kisses in front of people is just fine and I am not looking forward to the day when it’s not. As a child who grew up never hearing “I love you” from her parents and never getting any physical affection, I am now the complete opposite with my daughter. I tell her I love her 900 times a day. Think about it this way, maybe some other kids would be jealous that you ARE giving hugs and kisses at drop off.

My granddaughter, Lucy, and I had a little thing we did after she left the car. She would go and stand by the school gate and give me a little wave. New school, new year, no wave:( But a huggy/kissy while we were in carline! All good! GiGi

Eh, ouch, what did you do to me this morning? There is liquid pooling up and spilling up over my sight holes. It’s leaking and dripping, and my breathing holes are leaking. My throat is all clenchy-tight. Didn’t see that one coming. I might be dying.

You are such a great mommy!!!! Gotta admit that made me fast forward to when my little one will start doing that. She wipes her face when she gets a kiss now 🙁
