Awww crap, look what my kindergartener wants to do to her hair now
Okay, so today Zoey is getting her hair cut. Wait, no, that does not do it justice. Today Zoey is getting her hair CHOPPED OFF. Her beautiful, gorgeous, strawberry blonde hair that I lovvvvve.
Yup, she came to me last week and said she wanted to cut her hair.
ZOEY: I want to cut my hair.
ME: Okay, we can get you a haircut.
ZOEY: I want it short.
ME: (trying to sound upbeat) How short?
ZOEY: I want a bob.
ME: Like up to your shoulders?
ZOEY: No, a bob!!
ME: Does someone in your class have a bob?
I don’t know why I asked this. I guess I was just thinking that maybe she wanted to look like someone else. Apparently I don’t know my kid at all.
ZOEY: No, that’s why I want it. I want to be unique.
Sigh. How can I argue with that? I mean yes, I’m going to miss her long hair a lot, but my kid just made her own decision and she doesn’t want to be like everyone else. And that’s awesome. Remember the time she wanted to dye her hair? It took me a little while to agree to it, but hey, it’s hair, it can grow back. And most importantly, it’s not MY hair. It’s HER hair.
So today when she gets her hair cut into a short bob and I watch her lustrous locks fall to the floor of the hair salon, it doesn’t matter what goes through my head. What matters is what she sees on my face. And I’m gonna be smiling the HUGEST smile ever and saying she looks fabulous. Because as far as I’m concerned, if she’s happy, she really does look fabulous.

We were the lucky recipients of concurrent cases of head lice last summer (thank you, parents who fail to inform the school that your kid is infested). Both of my girls had long, gorgeous, curly locks, which were utter farking nightmares to treat. I got them both chin-length bobs as soon as we had finished treating, and then I cried myself to sleep.
But you know what? They’re absolutely beautiful, and much easier to maintain. And now they look like they belong in the cast of “Downton Abbey.”
If it’s long enough, she can donate her hair! My seven year old has done so twice now. She lets it grow then cuts it into a bob. She does look more grown up with it shorter as well. You will survive it! And it’s a lot easier to maintain it short.
As a daughter who was forced to have long hair until I was 14, I applaud you! When she did finally “allow” me to cut my hair she refused to take me so I had to have a friend take me. The last thing she said was, don’t come crying to me when it looks terrible! Then I came home and she raved about how cute it was but no matter what she said after, I will never forget what she said before.
My mom forced me to have a mullet until I was in 4th grade. Like, a short, spikey-on-top, kind of like Joan Jett, but way trashier and not as cool mullet. It was because she had one, and it looked horrible. On both of us. Also, everyone thought I was a boy. I know a bob is not a mullet, and I’m sure your girl’s new ‘do will be adorable. I only share this story to share in your horror; since middle school, I haven’t had my hair cut above my shoulders. I’m neurotic about it after the trauma mentioned above. If my 6 year old wanted to cut off her beautiful blonde hair, I’d let her, too. But I’d probably need to bring a Kleenex to the hairdresser.
It’s going to be adorable =) My cousin’s daughter just turned six and she’s been BEGGING for a short cut with bangs. Never said why and her mom finally caved. As soon as the stylist turned the chair for her to see it she whispers “I look like Taylor Swift” with a HUGE grin on her face. Hahahaha sneaky little thing wanted her cut so bad.
Why not donate it to the organization that makes wigs for kids with cancer?
My kindergartener said the same thing earlier this year. She insisted, and we got it cut to above her shoulders, and I was so sad to see those long curly locks hit the ground, but she looked adorable with the new cut. It was the first time she had ever even cared about her hairstyle! Oh kids… they go and get all grown up on us!!
